So I'm going to do my best to make it through this challenge, minus a few that I already know I'm not interested in writing about. It seems like it will be fun!
The topic for today is where do you come from?
(circa 1984. that's me in the glasses. my little brother wasn't born yet. also, note that my parents pretty much had the same haircut. ha!)
I come from a large family. There are five of us kids, but my mom actually gave birth to six children. I had a brother that died at a young age due to heart problems. I'm not really close to my family as a whole, but my little brother and sister mean the world to me.
When I was five my dad was driving through St. Louis, on his way home from a trip to Ohio, and he was hit by a 16 year old drunk driver who was driving a stolen vehicle. This incident set the tone for the rest of my childhood. I don't remember much of what life was like before then, but I can tell you that after that my family faced so many hardships because my dad was left disabled.
He couldn't work for a very long time, and my mom, who was a stay at home mom prior to the wreck, wasn't able to provide for us, take care of us, and take care of my father all on her own. We suffered, financially, because of it.
Growing up, I was picked on at school by most of the girls in my grade because I wore clothes that my mom made and I wore shoes from Walmart. I distinctly remember a time in the fifth grade when a girl informed me that I couldn't be in her circle of friends because my loafers were fake, and not Cole Haan's.
Around that time I decided that bitches are bitches. haha, just kidding.. but it was at that time that I decided to never, ever let someone else make me feel inferior because of something I have no control over, like my parents' financial status.
So, that's where I come from. What about you?
